Make the lamp safe and cool

Switch off and unplug a portable lamp before cleaning, and allow it to cool. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for shade removal if removal is needed. Do not dismantle wiring or remove fixed electrical fittings. Check the shade for brittle fabric, loose trim or a weakened frame. A dusty appearance is a minor problem compared with a damaged shade that no longer sits securely around its intended lamp.

Choose a gentle surface method

Use a clean soft brush or another method approved for the shade material. For a vacuum attachment, use it only if the care guidance permits and suction can be controlled without pulling fabric or trim. Support the shade carefully and avoid pressing on a thin frame. Paper and glued constructions may distort with water, so do not generalise advice intended for washable fabric. Work away from the socket and any electrical openings.

Inspect before putting it back

Check that dust has not simply moved onto the lamp base or surrounding table. Clean the base separately using its own instructions, without letting moisture reach wiring or the bulb holder. If the shade was removed, refit it securely according to the maker's method and confirm it is the correct type for the lamp. Do not operate a lamp with cracked parts, damaged cable or an insecure shade. Persistent discolouration from heat is a reason to investigate suitability, not just scrub harder.

Before you call it done

  • Unplug a portable lamp and let it cool.
  • Match the method to the shade construction.
  • Check secure refitting before reconnecting power.
