Look from a secure position
Check the entrance in daylight from a stable area. Remove loose packaging and ordinary debris without stepping onto a surface that appears slippery or damaged. Keep the door swing and the route to the pavement clear.
Look for cracked edges, a loose-looking slab or a gap that seems different from before. Do not jump on a suspect step to test it. Record what you can see and arrange a suitable inspection where the surface or structure is in doubt.
Notice water and dirt patterns
Check whether water collects after ordinary rain and whether a mat is hiding dampness or loose grit. Lift lightweight mats carefully when conditions are safe and clean beneath them according to the surface guidance. Keep drainage openings visible without removing covers or reaching inside.
Avoid placing pots or decorative objects where they narrow the landing or force somebody to step sideways. Consider the route used with shopping bags, a walking aid or a pushchair, not just a person arriving empty-handed.
Make the next action specific
Separate simple housekeeping from repairs. Clearing a delivery box is a small task; movement in a step, persistent pooling or a loose handrail needs proper attention. Tell the landlord or appropriate contractor what you observed and where. Keep a concern visible to the household without creating a new obstacle or relying on a makeshift repair.
Before you call it done
- The doorway and landing are clear.
- Mats are flat and the surface beneath is checked.
- Visible damage or repeated pooling has a next action.
Know the limit. Do not attempt structural step or handrail repairs from this check. Avoid unsafe surfaces and seek qualified help where stability is uncertain.
