Read every part of the care label

Identify whether the whole rug or only a removable top layer is washable. Note the allowed temperature, cycle, detergent and drying method. Check any separate underlay instructions. A rug that fits into a drum while dry may still exceed the machine's permitted load or become difficult to balance. Compare the rug maker's requirements with the washing machine manual before deciding that home washing is appropriate.

Prepare the rug and the room

Remove loose dirt using an approved vacuum or brushing method, checking for grit that could be dragged across the floor. Inspect seams, edging and backing for deterioration. Treat marks only with a compatible method and test where directed. Keep the floor beneath the rug clean and dry. Arrange the permitted drying space before starting; discovering afterwards that a large wet rug has nowhere suitable to go can create an avoidable problem.

Check condition before relaying

Follow the drying guidance fully and do not return a damp rug to the floor. Inspect for curling edges, shrunk layers or a backing that no longer grips. Refit any matched underlay correctly and ensure it is compatible with the floor finish. If the rug has distorted, contact the supplier rather than taping down the edges as a permanent solution. Between washes, a regular approved surface-cleaning routine can reduce the need for frequent full wet cleaning without ignoring spills.

Before you call it done

  • Confirm which rug components are washable.
  • Check both rug and machine load guidance.
  • Inspect dryness, backing and edges before reuse.

Know the limit. Do not machine-wash a rug with missing care information or deteriorating backing. Seek supplier or professional cleaning advice instead of testing an uncertain combination.
